Turister flykter fra stress og bråk, og setter kursen mot naturens ro. Inspirert av denne reisetrenden, lanserer Havila Kystruten verdens første «noise forecast» – eller støyvarsel på godt norsk.

Noise has become the second largest environmental cause of health problems after air pollution, according to the WHO, and acceptable noise levels are exceeded in cities around the world. The consequences are numerous and negative – ranging from heart attacks and concentration difficulties to sleep problems and a general reduction in quality of life.

At the same time, a tourism survey from Innovation Norway shows that the silence of Norwegian nature is one of the most valued qualities among international tourists. More than half of those surveyed state that their main motivation for exploring Norwegian nature and culture is the desire for peace and quiet.

This is the backdrop for Havila Kystruten's new campaign: "The Noise Forecast".

Helping tourists find silence.

  • "We cannot solve the major challenges of noise pollution alone, but we can help draw attention to the problem and inspire people to find silence. I think most of us could benefit from a holiday where we completely disconnect from hustle and noise," says Bent Martini, CEO of Havila Kystruten.

To help people around the world find silence, Havila Kystruten has launched a noise forecast service. The company has placed noise sensors at several locations along the Norwegian coast and displays live noise readings on its website. The sound levels are also compared to noise from major international cities, to put things in perspective.

Former weather presenter Elin Tvedt has recently been seen in productions such as "Celebrity Farm" and "16 weeks of hell". Now she returns as an anchor – but this time it is not the weather she is presenting, it is the noise readings in Havila Kystruten's campaign film.

Creating the conditions for silence.

For tourists who want to relive the sounds of Norwegian nature or get a taste of what awaits along the Norwegian coast, Havila Kystruten has created a dedicated Spotify playlist. It features sounds from the entire coastline, such as "Birdsong by the river in Øye", "Rowing on still water in Geiranger" and "Sheep grazing in Florø".Spotify-liste. Her finner man lyder fra hele kysten, som «Fuglesang ved elven i Øye», «Roing i stille vann i Geiranger» og «Sau på beite i Florø»

Havila Kystruten sails the classic coastal voyage between Bergen and Kirkenes. Along the way, numerous natural gems are visited where the only noise pollution is the cry of seagulls. The company has also placed strong emphasis on using quiet ships for a more peaceful and sustainable experience. "On board our ships you will still be able to experience the calm and silence that Norwegian nature offers. Compared to ships running on traditional fossil fuels, our LNG- and battery-powered ships give you a significantly quieter cruise experience," explains Martini.

The world's first noise forecast.

Behind the concept "The Noise Forecast" are Trigger and creatives Eystein Molland Norderval and Magdalena Kamøy, with Sølvrev as producer.

  • "People – especially us Norwegians – are obsessively focused on the weather when planning trips. As more and more people want to escape from hustle and stress, there should also be a service that forecasts noise levels. Since no such service existed, it was an obvious opportunity for Havila Kystruten, which operates some of the world's quietest battery-powered ships," says Norderval.

The two creatives believe many Norwegians take for granted the silence they have access to in their own country, and that most people are not aware that excessive noise can be harmful to health. Meanwhile, in other parts of the world, stress and noise have become something people flee from. "I grew up in the centre of Warsaw and remember that silence was something we longed for every single day," Kamøy adds.
